SIBU: A sum of RM50,000 has been set aside by the Nangka assemblyman for qualified students to take up foundation course at University College Technology of Sarawak (UCTS).
Speaking at the closing of a briefing on educational assistance available for higher institution of learning, Dr Annual Rapaee said the money was for the April intake.
“The first criteria for intended students to qualify for the fund is that they must be residing in the Nangka constituency. The second is that they will need to meet the requirement set by the university for the course,” he explained.
The students, he said, could be from any races and they were advised to apply for the fund at his service centre.
Annuar said the fee for each foundation course of either arts or science was at RM10,000. With that the RM50,000 could sponsor up to five students.
“As for the September intake, I will have to source for another RM50,000 so more students could benefit from it,” he said.
Annuar also advised local SPM graduates to study at UCTS.
“Many people asked me why study at UCTS and not colleges or universities in Kuala Lumpur. I’m not trying to promote UCTS but that the courses it offers are focused on industries in the state. It is good for local students to get their first degree here before obtaining their master or doctor of philosophy abroad,” he said.
By studying at UCTS, he said, they could also save expenses.
Separately, he said youths of today were better off than during his time as there were now a number of higher institutions of learning in their respective areas. – By ANDY CHUA
“During my time, we had to get good results in Form 5 then qualified for Form 6 where we would also have to score good marks to be accepted into university,” he added. – By ANDY CHUA
