JOHOR BARU: A car wash employee was fined RM10,000 and jailed one day for bribing a policeman.
Sessions court judge Mohamad Haldar Abdul Aziz meted out the sentence after M Jayakumar, 35, pleaded guity to offering a RM150 bribe to police constable A.B Satiyasilan at 7.15pm at Taman Maju on Feb 21.
DPP Ghafar Abd Latif prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
In his mitigation, the man claimed that he only earned RM500 per month and had to care for an elderly mother and wife.
During the incident, the accused tried to flee when stopped and was found in possession of a grinder machine.
However, he was unable to provide a proper explanation for the machine when he offered the money to the policemen as an inducement not to take action.
He allegedly committed an offence under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 which provides for an imprisonment of not exceeding 20 years and a RM10,000 fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification.
