KUCHING: Over 40,000 people are expected to attend the Chinese New Year open house hosted by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) tomorrow.

Heading the guest list are Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, as well as Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and state ministers.

Kuching South mayor Datuk James Chan said this year’s event was set to be even bigger and better than before, with many NGOs and corporate bodies confirming their participation.

“This is a community function for the people of Kuching and everyone is invited. Last year we had about 40,000 people and we expect more to come this year.

“We hope that this will be a night where people from different cultures and faiths will come together to enjoy themselves,” he told reporters yesterday.

He added that the open house was part of MBKS’ neighbourliness programme, which aimed to bring the community together and make Kuching a liveable city in line with its slogan “My City, My Future”.

Local Government and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh urged city folk to play an active part in the open house.

“It will be a grand event and an occasion for people to get together irrespective of their racial and religious backgrounds,” he said.

A total of 83 stalls will be set up for the participants to serve food and beverages to visitors as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Besides enjoying the free flow of food and drinks, visitors will be entertained by performances of lion dance and drums.

There will also be dance presentations by The Dance Academy as well as singing by Astro Classic Golden Melody Awards 2014 finalist Hwang Wei Chiew and 2010 champion Irene Tan.

Meanwhile, property developers Ibraco Bhd and Lee Onn Group will give out ang pows during the event.

Ibraco will have some 1,000 ang pows to hand out to the public on a first-come-first-served basis as well as ang pows for senior citizens from charitable organisations.

Lee Onn will give 800 ang pows to senior citizens aged 55 and above who register at its stall from 7pm onwards. Citizens aged 70 and above will receive the ang pows on the spot upon registering.
