Wheels of freedom for fishmonger

Mobile again: Mohd Tahir and his wife taking a ride on their new motorcycle with sidecar attached in Teluk Bahang.

FISHMONGER Mohd Tahir Awang is happy he can be mobile again, thanks to a motorcycle and sidecar given to him from the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.

The 55-year-old in Penang lost his left leg from the knee down four years ago to diabetes and had been depending on people to send seafood to him.

“With the sidecar, I will be able to go out in the evening and collect the catch of the day myself,” he said.

He said he had to work as the RM150 he receives monthly from the Social Welfare Department was not enough to pay his bills.

Mohd Tahir had been a fisherman for 28 years before he was disabled.

“M wife and daughter help me carry the fish and I have to depend on supplies to be delivered to me,” he said.

GiatMara (an agency under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development) Penang deputy director Harun Radzi said the motorcycle, sidecar, two ice boxes and two umbrellas worth over RM9,000 were donated to Mohd Tahir.

“We also provided entrepreneurship and basic accounting courses for him,” he said.

Also at the handover ceremony was Teluk Bahang assemblyman Datuk Shah Headan Hussain Ayob Shah.
