WWF-Malaysia and Sunway Shopping Malls is organising a Night Walk in support of Earth Hour.
The annual event to show support for environmental conservation will take place on March 28, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
Earth Hour asks everyone to take personal accountability for their impact on the planet and make behavioural changes to facilitate a sustainable lifestyle.
By switching off non-essential lights during Earth Hour, supporters will be acknowledging their commitment to do something more for the planet that goes beyond the hour.
Participants can register for the 1.8km walk at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall at https://www.pandashop.my/earthhour2015/
Those who take part in the walk will get to see a unique energy-free “step style” flash mob accompanied by drummers. This will be performed just before Earth Hour starts and again during Earth Hour, when the lights are switched off.
A video of the dance steps will be released via WWF-Malaysia’s website (wwf.org.my) next month so that participants can prepare to take part in the flash mob, a fun activity that also conveys the message of conservation.
“Conservation is the key in climate action. When we look to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide so that Earth’s climate system can be stabilised, at the heart of this is prudent and conservative resource use and management, especially in terms of fossil fuel use. We should protect and conserve nature and biodiversity as part of our developmental agenda at all levels: sub national, national and international.
“The sooner we transition into the Age of Sustainability with conservation at the very heart, the better prepared we will be to face impacts of a changing climate,” said WWF-Malaysia executive director and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Dionysius Sharma.
“Being the first shopping centre in the country to officially celebrate Earth Hour together with WWF-Malaysia in 2011, we are excited once again to join WWF in engaging our shoppers, other components of Sunway Resort City, and the public to participate in the exciting Night Walk, in conjunction with Earth Hour.
“Our mall in Penang, Sunway Carnival will also be doing its part by turning off non-essential lights,” said Sunway Shopping Malls chief operating officer Kevin Tan.
“Since 2008, Earth Hour has been one of the yearly activities implemented in our offices nationwide, and across our physical and virtual touchpoints to encourage our employees and customers to reduce their shared climate impact further by choosing a more sustainable lifestyle.
“This year, we continue our support by sponsoring as well as sending our customers as participants to the Earth Hour 2015 Night Walk in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and stay committed to addressing broader climate change and environmental issues through partnerships like this,” said Digi Communications and Corporate Responsibility head Joachim Rajaram.
The registration fee for the walk is RM60 per person, to be paid via the online payment gateway: https://www.pandashop.my/earthhour2015/
This entitles each participant to an “Earth Hour 2015” T-shirt – available in two designs by Leo Burnett KL – a car sticker, an e-certificate of participation and a 10% pandashop.my voucher.
All funds raised from the sale of walk packs will be channelled to WWF-Malaysia’s conservation efforts.
