Good exposure: Paintings, sculptures and other creations on display at the gallery in Gurney Paragon Mall.

GURNEY Paragon Mall in Penang has unveiled an urban art gallery andthe works of more than 20 local artists will be featured there until March 31.

Located on the second floor of the mall, the rustic pop-up gallery will be a hub of artistic exchange over the next two months.

The project is themed ‘Show Off’ and reflects the mall’s vision to uncover the potential in local artworks from oil and watercolour paintings, wood and root sculptures to digital arts, sketches, sculptures and mixed media.

The exhibition is also featuring various paintings of 52-year-old artist Koh Teng Huat, the founder of Balik Pulau Art Society, who uses the palette knife technique to bring life to his paintings.

He pointed out that one of his favourite art pieces displayed was inspired from the scenery of Gold Coast in Australia.

“I attempted to capture the serene atmosphere of the blue sky and turquoise sea,” he said at the launching of the exhibition on Sunday.

Hunza Group executive director Khor Tze Ming said the mall was committed to opening up St Jo’s to promote art and culture.

She said St Jo’s had been internationally recognised as one of the world’s best preserved heritage buildings.

“While the street art gallery concept has been pushed into maturity in European countries, it is only in recent years that a similar situation is happening in Penang.

“This initiative allows us to bring local budding artists together at a public art avenue,” she said.

Also present was state Tourism Development Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang, who said the state’s interactive street art had attracted many tourists.

“It is amazing to see Gurney Paragon Mall putting the spotlight on local artists and designers and this will serve to educate the younger generation on how art can impact our lives,” said Law.

Shoppers and visitors can drop by at the free exhibition located on Level 2 of the mall (above Pacific Coffee) daily from noon to 9pm.
