THOUSANDS of Catholics across Malaysia will be making their pilgrimage to Klang to celebrate the Our Lady of Lourdes (OLL) Feast Day and Novena at the OLL Church.

The Gothic-influenced architecture inspired by the churches in Lourdes, France, is a tourist landmark in South Klang and one of the most photographed buildings.

Hundreds of tourists and even expatriates are expected to be part of the grand event that will begin with daily mass from tomorrow to Feb 15.

OLL parish priest Fr Rev Michael Chua Kim Wah said the celebration this year was themed “Mary, the Star of Evangelisation”.

“Saint John Paul II made the proclamation in 1999 that the Blessed Virgin Mary is indeed the Star of Evangelisation because through her powerful intercession yielded a splendid flowering of Christian life in the hearts of people,” he said.

He said in conjunction with this celebration, the OLL Church would display a relic of Maria Goretti, an Italian saint who died after being stabbed by a neighbour in 1902.

“Catholic saints are honoured as men and women of great holiness, exemplars of the Christian life. Maria, at her deathbed in the hospital was able to forgive her assailant. She appeared in the dream of her assailant where she gave him flowers. On his release from prison the assailant became a Franciscan monk,” he added.

Maria is the patron saint of forgiveness and the relic will be deposited in a sepulchrum at the OLL altar from tomorrow to Saturday.

Rev Chua said a replica of the miraculous tilmati (outer garment worn by men) of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was loaned from the Church of Lady of Guadalupe in Puchong, would also be on public display throughout the celebration.

“On Saturday, the Holy Mass with Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Most Reverend Julian Leow will be followed by a Eucharistic procession. On Feb 14, the Apostolic Nuncio to Malaysia Archbishop Joseph Salvador Marino will celebrate mass with the people followed by a Marian procession,” he said.

“It is a message that is full of hope, love and divine goodness,” he added.

Weekday daily mass will be at 7.30pm except on weekends when it will be at 6pm.

OLL Church is in Jalan Tengku Kelana, Klang.
