THE Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) plans to introduce a ‘Car-Free Morning’ at Bandar Sunway in Seberang Jaya, Penang, beginning April.
Council president Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif said: “It has been proposed that the event be held from 6am to noon on the first Sunday of each month.”
She said that during the six hours, Jalan Todak 2 (located behind Sunway Carnival Mall) and Jalan Todak 3 (beside Billion Supermarket) would be closed.
She added there would be a variety of activities held along the closed road.
“We are still in discussion on what activities can be held there,” she said.
Maimunah said for a start, the event would be held on only one Sunday each month and if the response was good, it would be held twice a month.
She was speaking to reporters after chairing a full council meeting at the MPSP headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam, on Thursday.
Maimunah said the event would be similar to the ‘Car-Free Sunday’ which she had some experience organising in 2011, when she was the George Town World Heritage Incorporated general manager.
Over at the Penang island, the area around Beach Street in George Town has become off limits to motor vehicles every Sunday from 7am to 5pm in conjunction with ‘Car-Free Day’ since 2011.
Under the programme, Beach Street, Church Street Ghaut, Church Street and part of Bishop Street — that add up to a total of 835m — are cordoned every Sunday.
