KUCHING: A range of environmentally-friendly products from Thailand has the potential to be used in keeping the city clean, according to Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said.

He said the products under the Keeen brand used a bioremediation agent for general cleaning, degreasing and recovering oil spills and pollutants.

Bioremediation allows natural processes to clean up harmful chemicals in the environment.

“The local authorities can look into whether this agent can be used, especially in markets and eateries. Personally, I would recommend it because I want to have a clean and livable city which will attract tourists.

“But I leave it to the mayor to assess whether the product is suitable to be used,” he said after launching its distribution by PJ Energy Services (M) Sdn Bhd at the International Energy Week 2015 here.

An oil and gas company, PJ Energy Services is the sole distributor of Keeen products in Malaysia and Brunei.

The Keeen product line was developed by Dr Watson Ariyaphuttarat in collaboration with Thailand’s National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and National Science and Technology Development Agency.

It has received international innovation awards, including a gold medal in the best invention in biotechnology at the 23rd International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition 2012 in Kuala Lumpur.
