The fruits of co-operation: Residents of Adonis Blue Bukit Jelutong, through its Residents Association, has managed to raise enough funds to instal an automated boom gate at the entrance and to engage nine security guards to man the post.

The Residents Association (RA) of Adonis Blue Bukit Jelutong has an enviable record — out of 152 houses, 142 are members of the association.

“We are a close-knit community and the high membership was achieved through several activities over the past five years,’’ said its president Datuk Yusuf Ampuan Kechil.

He said community events like Family Day and gotong-royong sessions showed that the RA was active and had encouraged other residents to get involved.

Committee member Heng Eam Hooi, who was in the pro tem committee in 2004, said that Adonis Blue had very few houses then and security was not good.

“A handful of us decided to form a pro tem committee but it didn’t last long and a few other committees were formed only to be dissolved later.”

Today, the RA is made up of 13 main members with three sub-committees made up of 10 members each.

The sub-committees are security, landscape and environment and social events.

Yusuf said the committee members ensured that Adonis Blue was a safe and clean residential area and had formed close ties with the Shah Alam City Council.

Mark Lorenson, who lives in the area and is here under the Malaysia My Second Home programme, is one of the members responsible for taking care of the landscape and environment in the neighbourhood.

Lorenson and other committee members have provided a large bin for bulk waste to ensure that it is not disposed irresponsibly.

Yusuf said there were no patrols at the moment but residents kept an eye out for each other.

“There are eight road representatives who are also part of the main committee. We keep in touch through Whatsapp and information is disseminated to other residents,” he said.

To ensure the security of residents is not compromised, head of the security committee and former army personnel Menon Arsad drew a set of standard operating procedures for their security guards.

Menon said there were three guards during the day and six at night.

“The guards have 16 checkpoints,” he said.

The RA is looking to beautify the neighbourhood, especially the entrance to Adonis Blue as its president firmly believes that people do judge a book by its cover.

They are also setting up an emergency response team comprising doctors and are in the process of setting up a Rukun Tetangga unit.
