Dilapidated houses along Jalan Amoy need to go

Deserted: A rickety empty wooden house seen along Jalan Amoy.

SIBU: A number of dilapidated wooden houses at Jalan Amoy are an eye-sore and should be dismantled.

Lanang MP, Alice Lau in speaking at a press conference recently said either the owners or the local authority should seriously look into the matter.

“I have visited these houses and found that they have been left abandoned.

“Since they are located near the road shoulder, they could be dangerous to motorists as they might collapse in no time,” she said.

She said when she was there she could not even see any soul at the place.

The houses were built more than half century ago.

Due to their close proximity to the town centre, they were once well home for the people.

Dudong assemblyman, Yap Hoi Liong, meanwhile, said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) should use its Building Ordinance and Local Authority Ordinance to ascertain whether they are still fit for dwelling purposes.

“If they are no longer fit for dwelling, they should be demolised instead of leaving them there just like that,” he said.

He is worried that the houses might be used for unhealthy activities if left as they were.
