No signage placed to warn motorists of the hazards at Penang project site

Messy sight: Construction material and debris leftexposed in Jalan Residensi.

CONSTRUCTION debris left along Jalan Residensi, George Town, has raised the ire of motorists and residents staying in the vicinity.

Penang Hospital Visitors Board chairman Lim Thoon Deong who frequently uses the route said construction materials could be seen along the road and they posed a danger to road users.

“This road has a high volume of traffic and when they close one portion of the lane for the project, it will cause a bad jam especially during peak hours.

“The project has been going on for about two weeks,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He added that there was also no proper signage to warn the public of the hazards at the site.

“I believe it is a flood mitigation project to widen the drains, which is good.

“However, the contractor must put the safety of the public as the top priority,” he said.

An anonymous caller said he feared for the safety of motorists plying the road, especially during the night.

“I fear that if the matter is not rectified soon, an accident is bound to happen,” he said.

Newly sworn-in Penang municipal councillor Lim Boon Beng said he would ask the contractor concerned to clean up the area by today.

“This is a flood mitigation project undertaken by the council. It started in December last year and is expected to complete next month,” he said.
