SIBU: Food and drink hawkers at the central market have been urged to lower down the prices of their items.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Datuk Andrew Wong said after handing over new plastic chairs to the hawkers that by making their food and drinks cheaper, the place would be well patronised.
“I hope the stall owners will consider lowering their prices as SMC could not fix the prices,” he said.
Wong said for the public to enjoy cheaper food and beverage there, all the hawkers needed to cooperate to kick-start his proposal.
On the part of the council to make the venue popular among the people, he said it had repainted the place, installed 297 units of new tables and chairs.
Last month it had also installed 16 units of air coolers costing RM250,000 to make the place more comfortable for customers and food stall owners.
On the 710 new plastic chairs costing RM20,000 which were given to the three hawker association, he said they were personally donated by Local Government and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.
The three associations included Sibu Hawkers Association, United Sibu-Meradong Hawkers Association and Sibu Central Market Petty Traders Association.
“The 142 hawkers will be given five chairs each. However, they are the property of the three associations – when any hawker decided to stop renting the stall, the chairs will remain at the central market,” he said.
The other condition was that they are only allowed to bring out these chairs on the request of their customers.
When the customers leave, the hawkers will have to remove them, failing which they will be issued with a compound of RM100.
The council will issue a showcause letter to any stall issued with three compounds. He said they would be given 10 days to reply to the warning.
“We are doing this because we want to stop hawkers from putting out chairs to occupy the tables,” he added.
