THREE charity organisations received donations of RM5,000 each from students study-ing the Staffordshire University (SU) Business Degree Programme at DISTED College Yeap Chor Ee heritage campus in Macalister Road.
The students had raised RM15,000 for Pure Lotus Cancer Foundation, Shalom House and Penang Ru Yi Home Association by organising the DISTED Charity Educational Carnival 2014 on Dec 14 last year.
Organising chairman Choo Tze Liang said aside from raising funds, the event was also aimed at promoting leadership and organisational skills among the students.
“We are happy that we have successfully achieved both objectives and would like to thank all our sponsors, the college’s School of Business head Dr Liew Yueah Cin and CPA Australia Student Charter advisor Gwee Sai Ling for their support and advice,” Choo said.
“The donation is a good event to kick start 2015,” Dr Liew said before presenting the mock cheque to the representatives of the three charity organisations on Tuesday.
Penang Ru Yi Home Association volunteer Shum Jian Howe said the home is a children’s centre which provides shelter and accommodation facilities to children from single parent families, broken homes and families with financial problems.
“The donation may go to the building fund to build a three-storey building in front of the existing home in Mount Erskine so that the home can house more children,” Shum said, adding that the home has 17 children aged four to 13 at the moment.
Shalom House teacher Alvin Manuel said the centre’s focus was on educating children with autism.
“Our centre is dependent on public donation,” said Manuel.
Receiving on behalf of Pure Lotus Cancer Foundation was their representative Khoo Saw Guat.
