KEMAMAN: Residents around Kampung Seberang Tayor, here, now have a quick and convenient route to Bandar Chukai when the temporary bridge at Kilometre 9, Jalan Air Putih-Chukai in Bukit Machang was open.
For two weeks they had to use an alternative route making a detour of 40 kilometres to go to Bandar Chukai when the main road was damaged by the floods.
A survey by Bernama found completion work of the Acrow 700xs temporary bridge being carried out by 40 men from the Armed Forces’ Engineering Corps, Royal Army Engineers Regiment, Royal Amoured Corps, 18th Division of Royal Malay Regiment from Seri Pantai Seberang Takir Camp, Kuala Terengganu, and the Public Works Department (PWD).
Kemaman District PWD engineer, Hasmi Ahmad said his company will install temporary traffic lights from both directions to facilitate the flow of traffic since the bridge was quite narrow and can only be used one way at a time.
A civil servant Salleh Adam, 43, from Kampung Kuala Tayor said he was forced to use alternative routes from Bandar Seri Bandi to his workplace in Chukai which took almost an hour compared to 20 minutes previously.
“It has been difficult for the past two weeks having to get up early to go to work and returning home late,” he said.
The bridge will also benefit more than 15,000 residents of Kampung Air Putih, Kampung Teladas, Kampung Lubuk Lesung, Felda Seberang Tayor and Kampung Dadong. — Bernama
