Designing lingerie involves a lot of planning and creativity.
INSPIRATION can be many things: a burst of creativity, an idea out of the blue, or the great result of a long, hard process. And in the world of lingerie, inspiration comes with attention to detail, a passion for great design and a love for fashion.
When made, the garment inspires the wearer with a variety of feelings, ranging from well-being to sheer sensuality.
At Triumph, the designers believe there’s a “goddess” in every woman. Its products praise and encourage the uniqueness of women, and strive to bring out the best in them. Thus, all products are created with a love for detail, inspired by respect and dedication, made for today’s women.
With that in mind, Triumph began the quest for a fresh perspective in fashion and style by introducing the Triumph Inspiration Award (TIA), a competition initiated to challenge young talented designers from 32 countries to design undergarments.
Triumph Malaysia marketing manager Cecilia Wong said the contest dares contestants to create a unique piece of lingerie that flatters the female body, tempts the eye and makes the wearer feel truly special.
“We asked participating students to show us the woman that inspires them. Is she real or does she live in another world or time? We asked to be taken along on their personal journey,” said Wong.
Themed “Female Fascination”, the TIA is divided into two stages: a national final and an international final. Winning the national final will automatically qualify the student for the international final. Their inspirational creation will then be presented to the international media and judged by a jury of internationally renowned experts from the fashion, design and media fields.
In Malaysia, Triumph Malaysia is partnering with Lim Kok Wing University. Twelve finalists have been selected from 300 entries and their masterpieces will be premiered during a grand gala night at Bintang Circle in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
The winner stands to win RM5,000 in cash from Triumph, and gift prizes from M.A.C Cosmetics and A Cut Above. There will be performances like Hip Hop Dance and songs by Jaclyn Victor during the night.
Wong said the works submitted were impressive and it was clear that the contestants took the time to research the functions of lingerie to come up with their pieces. Among the concepts presented by the finalists were Happy Birthday Mr President, Dracula Bride and La Vie En Rose, she added.
Finalist Tan Siok Hoon, 40, said it was her first lingerie competition and described it as tricky, “like all competitions, because what the client looks for is different each time.
“Everyone has (submitted) good designs and has a fair chance of winning,” said the design student.
On her Aphrodite Concept, Tan said she drew inspiration from Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, lust and beauty.
“She’s the classic ideal of beauty. I have shell designs for the bra and draping for the panties like you see in the painting. There’s plenty of criss-crossing like in the ancient Greek times.
“I feel my designs would appeal to all women. It’s very contemporary, has commercial and artistic value, and is definitely wearable,” she adds.
Nurazleena Zakaria, another student finalist, said it was the first time she reached the finals of a competition.
“I’m extremely nervous by what the judges think. They can be brutal and scary,” she said. The 20-year-old drew inspiration from a movie, and described her Pretty Luxurious entry as undergarment which every woman can wear.
“I think my design is practical but everyone has their own style and taste. It’s simple yet sexy.”
The judges are Female magazine editor Seema Viswanathan, local designers Bill Keith, Carven Ong and Khoon Hooi as well as Triumph Head of Product Management and Design, Heidrun Kunzer. They will pick a winner to go up against the other contestants at the finals held in Beijing in July.
“In terms of exposure, input and functionality, I must say that Malaysia is still rather conservative. It takes great challenge and creativity to think out of the box in order to win the judges over in the finals,” said Wong.
Wong explained that the prize “is the interpretation, adaptation and realisation of the winning showpiece made into a commercial garment”. The winning piece will be produced as a limited edition and sold in selected Triumph stores worldwide. It will also be completed with hang tags featuring the name of the winner and its concept name. The prize money is €15,000 (RM75,727),€10,000 (RM50,487) and €5,000 (RM25,243) for the first, second and third place winners, respectively.
