Batik Merbok set to wow ‘em

PETALING JAYA: The new Batik Merbok is set to add zing to the batik industry.

A research centre called the Batik Merbok Design Centre will be set up to ensure that the production of Batik Merbok meets its set quality and trends which will appeal to the younger generation.

The patterns of Batik Merbok are based on elements such as the flora, fauna, and artefacts found in Merbok, Kedah.

“While previously people saw Kelantan and Terengganu as the two major batik suppliers, Batik Merbok will soon be ready to challenge the market with its unique designs which cannot be found on other types of batik,” Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin told a press conference yesterday.

He said it is now vital for society to first appreciate and support Batik Merbok.

“Our objective is to popularise Batik Merbok and turn it into an industry which Merbok citizens, especially single parents, the physically challenged and jobless, can benefit from,” he said.

Zainuddin hoped that the price of Batik Merbok could be kept to a minimum.

The Batik Merbok project is an idea of Zainuddin with joint initiatives from UiTM Kedah, UiTM Shah Alam and Pusat Khidmat Ahli Parlimen Merbok.
