Out of this world wardrobe

Hit Korean series My Love from the Star has created a K-raze for all the things worn by its lead actress.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock – or you're literally from another star – you must have seen or heard of the phenomenally popular My Love from the Star. The South Korean TV hit, which aired from last December to this February, was about an alien who landed on Earth four centuries ago and fell in love with a top actress from this day and age.

The leads in this 21-part fantasy romance were played by Kim Soo-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun (known as Gianna Jun in her TV comeback after 14 years). It's an screen reunion for the two, who first co-starred in The Thieves. Though their scenes in that blockbuster heist flick were brief, I enjoyed their sparring and their chemistry. In fact, Jun, who’s 32, reportedly contacted Kim, 26, to persuade him to take My Love after she heard they were both approached to star in it.

Boy oh boy, he owes her big time!

The show was so big, its finale was watched by more than 28% of Korea's total TV viewers. In China, it's been viewed online over two billion times on websites including PPS and iQiyi, since its debut late last year. Not only that, everything – and I mean everything – that Jun’s character Cheon Song Yi wore in My Love has been selling like hot cakes.

On Taobao, China’s equivalent of eBay, the list of My Love-related items – clothing, bags, shoes, watches, make-up, jewellery – grew as fashionista Cheon changed in and out of designer togs throughout the series. The numerous threads seen on Cheon provided plenty of sartorial eye candy. After all, she wasn't seen in the same outfit twice.

Besides the head-to-toe looks she sported from Chanel, Chloé and other high-fashion brands, she even wore Givenchy sweaters while lounging in her palatial home! In one comical scene, Cheon tried to disguise herself for a hospital visit but attracted more attention with her movie star sunglasses from Prada.

It helps that Jun – with her tall frame, flawless complexion and long hair – looks like a supermodel. Be it a simple, sleek wrap dress or a print stripe blouse, she's effortlessly stylish. It's no wonder a man from outer space fell head over heels in love with her.

Besides major brands like Gucci and Dior, Cheon’s wardrobe featured the likes of Paul Smith and Didier Dubot, which until months ago weren't widely known to Chinese consumers. In one scene, she paired an iconic Diego bucket bag from Alexander Wang with a parka jacket. In another, she matched her Diane von Furstenberg maxi wrap dress with a headband for a softer, girlish appearance.

And then, there are her shoes. I love, love, love her black French biker boots from Shoecomma Bonnie. After Cheon wore silver Jimmy Choo heels in the second episode, a shoe seller said she sold three pairs of the same footwear in one day. A year ago, she only sold three pairs all year, she said. Copies of the shoe were so sought-after, 100 pairs were purchased online within a few days.

According to The Korea Herald, a shade of YSL lipstick is no longer available since it was believed by fans to be one worn on the show. They “mistakenly heard" that Cheon wore Rouge Pur Couture No 52, and now the coral colour is sold-out on dozens of beauty websites and there's an “unspecified” waiting list on YSL’s own e-store. Elle Australia reported that one shopper at Melbourne Airport tried to buy 52 tubes of the rouge but failed.

The Korea Herald noted that the problem was Cheon “did not actually use YSL lipstick” and that it was just a rumour that “spread like wildfire”. An industry source revealed that the colour of her lips on the show couldn't possibly have been produced by one single product. “The make-up artist mixed a number of different (products) and YSL was not one of them,” the source said.

Along with lipsticks, My Love has helped boost the sales of fashion, accessories and even food – fried chicken and beer! – after they were seen on the telly. So, if you’ve not started watching this series, now’s a good time to tune in for some romantic hijinks. And some serious wardrobe envy.

Like any sane person, William spends his evenings gazing at the stars, hoping for a gorgeous alien to drop by. Send your feedback to star2@thestar.com.my.
