All maudlin and sentimental

I’VE often mentioned my father in my weekly articles; not in any great detail but more as a sidekick to my slightly eccentric mother. Today, though, he features largely in my thoughts and, therefore, in this column. You see, had he been alive today, my father would be celebrating his 90th birthday.

And no, I’m not going to get all maudlin and sentimental and tell you about the time he rescued me from a river by pulling me out by my hair. That actually wasn’t me; it was one of my sisters. Still, it says a lot about him when you consider that he waded into fast-flowing water knowing full well that he couldn’t swim. Afterwards, my family’s accidental hero brushed the incident off as being something that anyone would have done under the same circumstances.
