The story of San Andreas, one of this summer's highly anticipated blockbusters, was created from the personal experiences of its scriptwriter Carlton Cuse.

At a recent press conference with the cast and crew of San Andreas in Los Angeles, California, Cuse tells journalists about happened one night more than 20 years ago.

Cuse and his family went through the horrifying 6.7-magnitude Northridge earthquake in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles way back in 1994.

"It was 4am and one of my neighbour's houses had been completely totalled. The other neighbour also suffered quite a bit, although our house was in worse condition.

"My daughter had been shaken off her bed and it was really dark and everything was broken; there was glass all over the floor. My wife was frantically looking for our daughter, asking 'where's Caroline?'. It was horrible.

"When writing the story of San Andreas, I kept going back to that memory. I channeled all the emotions I felt that night when I was developing the characters," Cuse shared.

Another one who survived the Northridge quake was actress Carla Gugino. She admitted that her story, though scary, was perhaps a tiny bit comedic.

"I woke up from the quake... naked.

"As Carlton said, it was dark, the power had gone out and you just can't see anything. I was staying with my boyfriend at Palisades (in California) at the time and when it started to shake, I woke up and couldn't find my clothes.

"So I just started to walk out of the house naked, but by some miracle I found a robe on the floor and picked it up!

"But you know what? I would have just walked out possibly to my death – because that's what I was thinking at the time –without any clothes on!"

Needless to say, Gugino no longer sleeps without any clothes on. "But only in California!" she quipped.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson revealed that while living in Florida some years back, he saw first hand what Mother Nature can do. "I went through Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It was bad but it's also amazing how a community can quickly come together and help one another through trying times," he said.

As for Alexandria Daddario, she feels that living in Los Angeles for a few years has helped heightened her sense of awareness on earthquakes.

"I have felt some tremors before here but I've been fortunate enough to not actually experience anything big.

"But I do look out for signs now; my dog actually feels it before I do! He'll suddenly jump on me for no reason, and that's when I know that something is happening," said Daddario, a native of New York who also revealed that she was in the city when 9/11 happened.

San Andreas opens in Malaysia on May 28. Watch out for our cover story on the movie this Thursday.
