Female-led ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ spin-off due in 2017.
Since the latest movie about Spider-Man didn’t earn as much as expected at the box office, Sony has decided to shift its attention to other characters in the Spider-verse. Following news of the 2016 release of Sinister Six, a feature on the villains of the franchise, Deadline reveals that the studio is also working on a female-focused spin-off for 2017.
Postponed to 2018 due to the second movie’s disappointing box office revenues (US$708mil/RM2.27bil worldwide compared to the US$1bil/RM3.2bil the major had hoped for), The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is giving way to a new superheroine.
Lisa Joy Nolan (Pushing Daisies), who is none other than Jonathan Nolan’s wife and Christopher Nolan’s sister-in-law, has reportedly been tapped to pen the screenplay. While the identity of the character chosen by Sony remains a mystery, specialists are already betting on Spider Woman, Silver Sable or Black Cat, played by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Sony appears eager to build an entire world around its arachnid superhero. Before launching its upcoming feminine spin-off, the studio will release an adaptation of the Sinister Six comics. Recently announced by the studio, the movie about the villains of Spider-Man’s universe will arrive in theatres in 2016. Drew Goddard will helm the feature, which is expected to focus on six of the superhero’s most formidable enemies – Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter and Vulture – who, as in the comics, gang up against Spidey.
Another villain is even getting his very own film. Sony confirmed in December that it is developing a feature dedicated to the terrible Venom, which will be directed by Alex Kurtzman and released in 2017. – AFP Relaxnews
