Aaron Eckhart: Of monster and man

ACTOR Aaron Eckhart is no stranger to playing a monster of sorts. In fact, his portrayal of Adam in I, Frankenstein may strike you as one of the nicest characters he’s played on film!

In The Company Of Men (1997)

Eckhart plays Chad, a corporate employee who comes up with a plan to date an insecure woman, make her fall in love with him and then break her heart. He carries out the plan with co-worker Howard (Matt Malloy), where both of them will date the same woman and dump her simultaneously. Their victim in this scheme? A deaf colleague played by Stacy Edwards.

Nurse Betty (2000)

Small town waitress Betty (Renee Zellweger) is married to Del (Eckhart). She has no idea that her husband is having an affair with his secretary. She is also clueless about her husband’s drug-dealing business at his workplace. Oh, and he also plans to leave Betty for his secretary.

Thank You For Smoking (2005)

As the vice president of the Academy of Tobacco Studies, Nick Naylor (Eckhart) claims there is not a definite link between smoking and lung cancer. Of course, the research is funded by tobacco companies. Nick is also a smooth-talking tobacco lobbyist. His job scope include convincing a cancer-stricken man to withdraw a lawsuit against tobacco companies and take bribe money instead.

Black Dahlia (2006)

Based on a novel by James Elroy, Eckhart plays a policeman who becomes obsessed with solving an infamous murder case. In the process, he emotionally abuses his long-time girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson). His growing animosity also led him to become estranged from his partner (Josh Hartnett).

The Dark Knight (2008)

Fuelled by rage over the death of his girlfriend Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Gotham City district attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) goes on a murderous rampage as Two-Face. Eckhart was menacing as the hideously-scarred villain seeking out the answers to his girlfriend’s death.
