When Nguyen Van Long was 26, he moved to Nam Bau Islet in the middle of a lake in the southern province of Dong Nai in Vietnam. Nothing unusual about that, except he was the only person there. Long, now 62, lives there today with his wife and five-year-old grandson.

He settled on the islet formed on the lake (along with 75 other islets) after the Tri An Hydropower Plant was built on Dong Nai River in 1984. The 323 sq km lake was once a forest. Back then, Long made a living by chopping trees.
