A walk in the neighbourhood park of Taman Jaya in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, will lead you to a treasure trove of books.

Appropriately called Rumah Buku (House of Books), it is a community project by the Petaling Jaya Community Library to encourage the public to read.

Whether you’re a local or a curious tourist, you would enjoy this place.

Here is a chance to spend a day at the park, get some fresh air, and do some reading.

A spokesperson from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) reveals that Rumah Buku operates on the concept of “read and share” wherever you are.

There are hundreds of books here – for both children and adults – from fiction to non-fiction. They are available to everyone without membership requirements. Instead, it operates on the basis of trust. Visitors can read any amount of books at the location or take them home, and then return them later, at no cost.

A recent visit to Rumah Buku revealed a diverse range of books, including cookbooks, autobiographies/biographies, and general knowledge books, as well as fiction like crime/suspense thrillers, classics and other types of novels.

Most of the books are in English and Bahasa Malaysia but there are a few in other languages. The turnover of books is high as there are many visitors who borrow and also donate books.

It is somewhat similar to book sharing/exchange programmes like the international Bookcrossing club.

Many of the books available at Rumah Buku are donated by individuals, societies and corporations. Visitors are also encouraged to donate books (in good condition) at the self-service kiosk for book donations.

Rumah Buku is open from 7am to 7pm daily at the giant gazebo (in front of the Petaling Jaya Museum) at Taman Jaya park. It is an open, self-service concept so there aren't any staff manning the place. You also do not have to sign-out the books.

Other facilities available at the park include playgrounds, toilets and a canteen. There is also a man-made lake, popular for jogging and walks. The place is suitable for the whole family.
