If you’re already planning your holidays for next year, consider adding Dusseldorf to your list.

The city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is known as the gateway to several European destinations. It just takes a few hours by road or railway – shorter if you’re flying – to get to Belgium, France, Luxembourg or the Netherlands.

Dusseldorf is a grand place to visit. The city has a rich cultural background, and is home to many historical landmarks and icons, as well as art galleries, palaces and modern architectural wonders.

The people of Dusseldorf are also more laid back compared to the other folks in Germany’s major cities. Head there during Karneval festival and you’ll see how wild they can party!

This city on the river Rhine is also known as a fashion capital, and it’s hard to argue with that – the locals are a smartly-dressed bunch. Having its famous shopping street Konigsallee lined with luxury brands as well as affordable local shops helps.

Another wonderful place to visit is the Altstadt (or Old Town) where you can find an old church called Gothic Kreuz-Herrenkirche among lively pubs, restaurants, bakeries and brewery houses.

Meanwhile, the modern part of the city is called the Medienhafen, where curiously-designed buildings and structures like Neuer Zollhof or the Gehry Buildings are found.

The Gehry Buildings at MedienHafen are a sight to behold.

To book your trip, check out Singapore Airlines’ seasonal promotions. The airline flies four times weekly to Dusseldorf – 13 hours non-stop on the Airbus A350-900 – from Singapore’s Changi International Airport.

If you’re wondering how you can survive this long haul, don’t worry as there are over 1,800 on-demand inflight entertainment options that range from the latest movies and TV programmes to hit music and video games.

The airline has also upgraded its KrisFlyer app to include more functions and better integration. In the “My Trips” function, real-time information such as baggage belt number, weather conditions and currency exchange are displayed.

And you can scan physical boarding passes via a new barcode function, for the ease of adding your bookings to the app.

Passengers can also create and personalise an entertainment playlist by adding movies, TV shows and podcasts on KrisWorld (the airline’s entertainment system) to the app even before you board the flight!

Plus, the app has a “Translation Assistant” feature and a “Measure Your Baggage” function to help determine if the size of your carry-on is within cabin limits.
