Have you ever wanted to find out more about dinosaurs, see what it is like on an oil drilling platform, or experience what it is like being in outer space? You can at Petrosains, The Discovery Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

It is an interactive science discovery centre for both children and adults where you can see, hear, touch, play and interact with the exhibits and installations.

Established in 1999, the centre has attracted over five million visitors to discover, explore and learn more about science and technology. It is open from 9.30am to 5.30pm daily.

Why you should go

Hundreds of interactive exhibits spread across 7,000sq m of space is what you’ll find at Petrosains. The exhibits trace the evolution and scientific relevance of the energy industry while also focusing on general sciences and its application to everyday life.

What to do

Your journey into the world of science and discovery starts the minute you go into the entrance lobby right until the end where the Xplorasi Gift Shop is located. There are many themed areas that you’ll come across and here are some that you should check out.

Start with the Dark Ride, which is shaped like an oil drop. The ride takes you through peaceful, dark surroundings that feature the rainforests, mountains and underwater scenes of Malaysia. There is also an audio-visual presentation which takes you through Malaysia then and now.

Next is Space is where you can explore the latest space technology. You can find out how astronauts live, work and play in space; try programming a Mars rover across the Martian landscape; experience a hurricane on Jupiter; or feel what it’s like being in outer space and weightless through Human Gyro.

Go back in time as you walk through the Time Tunnel to Geotime Diorama which is centred around an elaborate volcanic landscape. You’ve gone back to the ancient world 200 million years ago when dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures roamed the earth. You can walk across a wooden rope bridge to get a closer look at these massive creatures and even learn more about how fossils, minerals and crystals, as well as black gold (oil) are formed.

You can control what Robothespian says and some of its movement too.

At the Science Station, there are hourly science shows from 10.30am onwards which teach about and simulate various scientific facts.

There is also Robothespian, an AI interactive robot that you can interact and have lots of laughs with too. You can basically control what it says and also some of its movement.

Sparkz is where you can challenge your family and friends to a Robo Soccer match, play with the big screen Interactive Art, and more. It also offers Maker Studio, which is suitable for children above eight. Ample DIY materials are provided for them to learn through hands-on sessions to build, create and make stuff.

Don’t worry if your child is younger as there is the Innovation Lab which is suitable for children below eight. There is also TotSpot, a safe place for toddlers to play and learn.

One of the highlights of Petrosains is the Oil Platform. You can experience what it is like being on an offshore oil rig at this built-to-scale replica. Walk around the two-storey platform, touch and feel the drilling apparatus, wear the overalls and safety helmets to pose for photos, and more.

If fast cars and Formula 1 are your thing, you would love Speed, which is dedicated to all things fast. Go on a simulated helicopter ride, check out a live-size replica of an F1 race car, or try your hand at simulation F1 race car driving.

Upstairs, you’ll find the Molecule Nano World where you can try to “create some chemistry” with hands-on experiments helped by friendly guides.
