For more food and heritage, look towards China’s southeastern shores and you’ll find Fuzhou, a city known for its sweet-and-sour flavours, street food and over 2,000 years’ worth of history. Its rich heritage makes Fuzhou one of the more significant historical hubs in China.
One way you can experience this history is by visiting Sanfang Qixiang, which translates to “Three Lanes and Seven Alleys”. This old quarter provides a glimpse into Fuzhou’s history and the centuries-old mansions hearkens back to their imperial past.
If you’re looking for a more relaxing retreat, you can take a bath in the numerous hot-springs available in the city. Venues such as the Gui’An Hotspring Tourism Resort allow tourists to melt away their stress before heading out for more exploration.
If you’re interested in Fuzhou’s culinary fare, try out its renowned Fujian dish, Fo Tiao Qiang (Buddha Jumps Over The Wall). It’s a delicacy which requires premium seafood ingredients such as abalone and fish maw, and it takes three days to prepare! It’s definitely the main thing you should try if you’re in the area.

Some 900km north of Fuzhou lies Nanjing, a destination that’s also known as the city of culture. It has a long history of education, politics and research, resulting in locations that carry interesting pasts — perfect for travellers who like to absorb the stories behind the places.

If you’re interested in experiencing the grandeur of Nanjing’s educational campuses, then head on to the beautiful compounds of Nanjing University. In a similar vein, you can try visiting the unique Librairie Avant-Garde, an indie bookstore that stretches for miles.
