IF you ever find yourself in the quaint coastal town of Tanjung Sepat in Selangor’s Kuala Langat district, consider visiting this ecopark.
Billed as a wellness organic centre, this well-kept secret has long drawn busloads of tourists from China.
The reason for this fervour? Bird’s nest.
Kuan Wellness Ecopark is kind of a one-stop centre on all things bird’s nest. But that’s a given when its owner, the Kuan family, is one of the bigger commercial producers of the luxurious health food in the country.
Why you should go
Bird’s nests are tagged with a premium price. If you’ve always wondered why, a trip here will be an eye-opening experience. Seeing the workers diligently picking out feathers and other impurities from the nests instils a sense of wonder at the painstaking attention to detail.
For those who grow up in a Chinese household, chances are you would have heard mum extolling the benefits of bird’s nest over the years. Be sure to sample the nourishing food – served in a variety of refreshing desserts – while you’re here.
What to do
There’s an informative documentary on the history of swiftlet (the bird species which produces these edible nests) farming that’s shown to visitors. Be sure to catch the in-house production as it gives a comprehensive insight into the bird’s nest business in the region.
Once you have watched the documentary, move on to a neat exhibition space that shows the various forms of bird’s nests that are farmed in Malaysia.
Apart from the exhibits, there are also “trick-eye” installations where visitors can take fun 3D photos.
Within the park is also a mini zoo and bird park. Here’s where visitors can get close to Mandarin ducks, rabbits and parrots among others. There is also a tropical fruit farm where you can take a stroll at.
Who will like it
Located between the Sepang Gold Coast and Morib Gold Coast, the Kuan Wellness Ecopark is a respite away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Families with young children can spend some quality time together amid greenery and cute animals.
Of course, there’s also much to learn about bird’s nest. Bird’s nest enthusiasts should make a trip here to learn more about this opulent food.
Driving would be the best option to get to the park. The GPS coordinates are 2.6934° N, 101.4970° E, or you can follow the directions on Waze or Google Maps.
You can also hire private car services to take you there if you’re coming with a big group. Alternatively, contact a travel agency to arrange for a day tour.
