It’s no secret that online booking is growing in popularity. According to statistics recently revealed at the launch of The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta)’s one-stop travel portal, eight out of 10 travellers use the Internet to make their travel plans; and travel is ranked as No.1 in online spending.
Matta hopes to unite all licensed travel operators under one virtual roof, to provide the best in travel packages for both Malaysia and international destinations.
It was launched by Tourism Malaysia director general Datuk Seri Mirza Mohammad Taiyab and Matta president Datuk Hamzah Rahmat on June 1.
The portal www.matta.travel, offers five categories: Malaysia, International, Umrah (Muslim pilgrimages), Halal (Muslim tours), and Special Needs (for wheelchair-bound travellers).
As at time of the launch, there are currently 340 packages offered on the travel portal and Matta hopes to double it to more than 700 by year end.
According to Tourism Malaysia Licensing Division under secretary Nor Yahati Awang, the travel portal offers security and protects the interests of the consumer. “There are risks buying from unlicensed vendors because it ruins the country’s reputation if the traveller doesn’t have a positive experience,” she said during a press conference after the launch.
Travellers can register to use the portal, search for travel packages by destination, type (such as adventure, free and easy, city life or honeymoon), or operator, and even customise their trip by including accommodation, meals and flights. They can also filter their search by price range.
With the unique .travel domain, the travel portal aims to help travel businesses to promote themselves on the Internet, as well as consumers to identify the best places online to find travel-related information. .travel, a top-level domain launched by Tralliance Corporation in 2005, is devoted exclusively to the travel industry.
