In pictures: Despite ban in India, noodles live on... and on... and on

An Indian street vendor prepares noodles for customers on the side of a road in Kolkata on June 9, 2015.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) may have banned Nestle from making and selling its popular Maggi noodles in the country, but people's taste for noodle-type dishes hasn't waned.

A popular street food in India is Hakka noodles. The dish didn't really originate in China, but is called that by the way it is cooked. Also called chow mein, these noodles are cooked with Chinese condiments and Indian spices. The noodles used are usually a thin wheat variety. They are tossed in a spicy sauce and cooked together with vegetables to eat on their own, or served plain on the side with other dishes.
