Rohit Bal, one of India’s best-known fashion designers, died on Friday (Nov 1) at the age of 63.

His legacy is one of traditional artistry and red carpet glamour. He is celebrated for always having fused traditional Indian patterns with modern aesthetics.

Just two weeks before his death, Bal showcased his final collection at Lakme Fashion Week in Delhi. It was described by him as a "celebration of nature's beauty".

The designs featured majestic motifs of flowers and animal.

"Through this collection, I aim to slow down time and allow the audience to appreciate the intricacy and grace that both fashion and nature offer," he was quoted as saying by Elle India.

His death has led to tributes pouring in.

The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) called him a "legendary designer" in a posting on Instagram.

“Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion and inspired generations,” the statement added.

Beyond his home country, Bal is also loved by celebrities the world over. Hollywood actress Uma Thurman and supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Pamela Anderson have worn his creations. In 2001, tennis star Anna Kournikova walked the ramp for his Paris show.

In 1996, Time magazine even named him as India's "master of fabric and fantasy".

At his Lakme Fashion Week show, Bal was seen dancing on stage as he took his bow.

“I am shattered. He was in such high spirits at his last show. He was looking forward to the future. He was ecstatic as he watched his creations walk down the ramp,” said Sunil Sethi, chairman of FDCI.
