It is time to bid farewell to bright Living Coral, last year’s colour, and welcome Classic Blue, Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2020.
This deep classic blue that gives out a dependable and no nonsense vibe is a tone that is not only easy to wear, it’s also a colour that you can’t go wrong with. An added bonus is that it can meld seamlessly into your look.
According to the Pantone Color Institute, Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue instills calm, confidence and connection. This enduring blue hue also highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.
An expert on colour trends, the Pantone Color Institute helps companies make informed decisions about colour for their brands and products.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and one of the most influential people in the world of colour, says on the Pantone website, “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.”
Eiseman adds, “imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”
The Pantone Colour of the Year selection process is not a whimsical one, instead it requires thoughtful consideration, observation and trend analysis.
To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s colour experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new colour influences.
According to Pantone, this can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions.
Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures and effects that impact colour, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.
When it comes to fashion, this Classic Blue has already been spotted on the runways and at beauty counters.
If you check your wardrobe, you’re bound to find something in this colour, if not among your clothes, then shoes, bags or accessories.
But how about makeup? Classic Blue has turned up in an unusual beauty product – the lipstick. In the past, blue was never a traditional colour applied to the lips, but instead more popular as eyeshadow.
With goth influences that played with shades of black as the key makeup colour, blue was a close complementary to wear on lips, eyes and nails.
In a modern take, beauty brands started to see the value of including blue in their arsenal of lip and nail colours. By providing a blue tone in lip or hair colour, brands started to appeal to a younger generation of customers who are all about experimenting when it comes to creating beauty looks and basically, breaking makeup rules.
