Malaysian designer incorporates songket into her collection of luxury gowns

Sin Hui Wen believes that all designers should be proud of their country’s heritage.

Finding the balance between tradition and modernity is often something fashion designers have to grapple with. For Sin Hui Wen, the challenge has led to the creation of a contemporary songket collection.

To be unveiled at the Malaysia Central Asia Fashion Designers Gala on Nov 26 in Kuala Lumpur, it comprises luxurious gowns that highlight the beauty of the heritage fabric. Sin names it Rafflesia Royal Songket, in honour of the Rafflesia Pearl Centre – her family’s jewellery brand. She is serving as the company’s in-house fashion designer, after having graduated from London College Of Fashion this year.
