An eye area skincare regime is necessary as it is created specifically to tackle fine lines, dark circles, dryness and puffiness. - 123rf.com

For this month’s Tried and Tested, we looked at some eye care products ranging from creams to serums.

The eye area is delicate as the skin there is a lot thinner than on the rest of our face, hence beauty brands always advise against the use of a skincare that is not meant for the area such as your regular moisturiser or serum. This prevents damage or irritation.

An eye area skincare regime is necessary as it is created specifically to tackle fine lines, dark circles, dryness and puffiness.

An eye skincare from a cream, gel to serum is specifically created to treat the thin skin around the eye area. It is meant to moisturise, brighten and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The reason that a regular moisturiser is not suitable for your eye area is that it may contain stronger ingredients and may not be gentle enough for your delicate eye area, and this may trigger some irritation.

Kiehl’s Youth Dose Eye Treatment, RM169

With a clear, rounded tip, this anti-ageing eye cream is easy to apply. The tinted, lightweight formula also absorbs quite effortlessly into skin and works as a semi-concealer to an extent. Containing ingredients like pro-retinol, vitamin C and grape seed extract, the cream is said to instantly smoothen and brighten eye area, while helping to reduce the appearance of under eye lines and dark circles over time. I feel this product does help hydrate the eye area, and coupled with the tint effect, the eye area will appear a bit brighter and smoother. However, as for targeting fine lines and dark circles, the effect is rather minimal, and takes a much longer time to materialise. –  Wong Li Za

Dior Prestige Le Micro-Serum De Rose Yeux, RM669

What I liked about this serum is that it has an applicator with 10 ceramic micro-beads so I can massage around the eye area. Enriched with Rose de Granville fruit, which contains 22 micro-nutrients, it’s supposed to make the eyes look brighter, more open and visibly rested. The serum has a lightweight texture and dissolves upon application. You don’t have to use much, just squeeze a little and start massaging beneath and around the eye area. It gives a cooling sensation and it’s like you’re massaging all the puffiness away. I really enjoyed using it – it feels like a relaxing and pampering ritual. I felt my eyes looked less puffy and brighter after continuous use. – Dzireena Mahadzir

Biotherm Life Plankton Eye, RM220

eyeThis comes in a jar – something which I really dislike, because I had to dip my finger into it for every application. That said, I love using the cream. It has a light texture that absorbs quickly, so it doesn’t migrate and get into my eyes. The brand claims that it reduces wrinkles, puffiness, bags and dark circles. I can attest that it does help brighten up my eyes (people have commented I look less tired!). – Bervin Cheong

Skin Doctors Eyetuck, RM199

My eye area suffers from the little sleep I get and ageing, and needs help. The Skin Doctors Eyetuck is easy to use as it’s dispensed with a pump. One pump is enough as the cream is light, glides on smoothly and soaks in quickly. The Eyetuck is specially formulated to decongest the water that pools under the eyes. It also contains apricot oil and shea butter. The skin around my eye is definitely smooth and moisturised, and my eyes are not so puffy most days. Because it’s so easy to use, I will definitely continue to use it. – Ivy Soon

Lancome Advanced Genifique Yeux Light-Pearl Youth Activating Eye & Lash Concentrate, RM292

This new youth-activating eye and lash formula is highly concentrated in probiotic fractions and claims to smoothen fine lines, wrinkles, depuff eyebags, reduce dark circles and fortify lashes within four weeks. Having tested this serum for about two weeks, using every morning and night, I have to say I love it. The texture applies beautifully and doesn’t sting my eyes (I have experienced stinging by a well-known American eye skincare brand before!). Genifique is one of the few brands where I have seen improvement in my fine lines, and this concentrate doesn’t disappoint. The fine lines under my eyes are softer and less defined. I love that it’s a two-in-one where it treats the lashes as well (because who has time for a second lash product) but to be fair I will need more time to assess its ability to fortify lashes. – Sandra Low
