At Dyson, they take hair seriously (as do the rest of us), and at the recent Dyson Hair Science 3.0 event in Seoul, South Korea, the media got a first hand look at the science behind their cult styling tools – the Supersonic hair dryer and Airwrap styler.

As someone who is a major hair person with a deep attachment to my styling tools, it was in interesting look at understanding hair-raising issues that affect or contribute to looking salon-worthy.

At the event, there were demos that showed how the Dyson airflow technology worked with the attachments and intelligent heat control. We got a closer look at how extreme heat can damage hair and what Dyson does to resolve the issue.

The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer has intelligent heat control which helps to ensure hair isn’t exposed to high temperatures. So your hair dries quickly but without using extreme temperatures, which helps for daily or frequent use.

Meanwhile, the Dyson Airwrap styler uses jets of air to allow you to achieve voluminous curls, natural waves and smooth blow-dry finishes at home. It works using the Coanda effect. This occurs when a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface, and due to differences in pressure, the air flow attaches itself to the surface.

So you style your hair using air combined with heat, and the result is a natural look with a sleek finish, without extreme heat damage.

Sam Kyle Burrowes, advanced design engineer, was part of the design team that developed the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer. He said the brand constantly looks at how to further improve on its existing products and find solutions.

“As you know we’re never satisfied with where we are with our technology. We’re constantly looking at ways to improve our machines and the way they perform. Developing new attachments for the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and Dyson Airwrap styler demanded significant research, design and development, and countless hours of testing across a diverse range of hair types.

"As we do with all Dyson technology, we believe in testing our machines obsessively in each market, and only releasing them once we are truly satisfied with its performance. These new attachments will be available in Malaysia soon, so stay tuned for details!”

What we were shown was a preview of the new attachments for Dyson Supersonic – the gentle air dryer, re-engineered diffuser and re-engineered styling concentrator.

These attachments were re-engineered to give users better styling options, but with the same emphasis on hair health.

The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer has new attachments for better styling purposes.

Achieving the look, well-known South Korean hair stylist Park Je-hee who counts Jennie of Blackpink and actress Hyojin Kong as her clients, was on hand to give a demo using the new attachments.

The gentle air dryer works for fast yet gentle styling for fine hair and sensitive scalps while also preventing colour fade. The re-engineered diffuser now has longer prongs for better airflow and drying. It also helps define curls and reduce frizz.

Meanwhile, the re-engineered styling concentrator is now wider and thinner for more precise airflow, and controlled styling, one section at a time. This helps for creating a smooth, straight finish or a bouncy blow dry.

There are also new and longer 30mm and 40mm Airwrap barrels for the Dyson Airwrap styler, which is great for longer hair and cuts down time on styling. Also included were re-engineered smoothing brushes to serve diverse hair types/conditions.

Park demonstrated how quickly and efficiently you can use the attachments to create either sleek, smooth hair or glossy waves. She says she uses the Supersonic on her celebrity clients and apparently Jennie will only use that as it doesn’t damage her hair.

As someone who uses both the Supersonic and Airwrap, a common issue is that in our weather, hair doesn’t seem to stay in perfect condition for very long.

Park says it’s important to use hair products: “While hair is still wet, please use hair essence/treatment before using the Supersonic dryer as it will keep your hair extra shiny and sleek, and then style it. The models on stage have been pre-treated before styling, and most of the Korean actresses and celebrities do the pre-treatment with hardening mousse to make their hair style last longer.”

She says she also uses dry shampoowhich helps to hold the look, but stresses on making sure to wash your hair later as you should never go to sleep with treatment and dry shampoo in your hair.

When ask if her celebrity clients have used any of the new attachments, she says for the gentle dryer she asked them to use it with and without the nozzle to see the difference. They said it was a lot less hot and much more comfortable. The new and longer airwrap barrels were also more convenient and it took less time to do longer hair.

The new attachments for Dyson Supersonic are now sold together with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. The set is available in Malaysia on shop.dyson.my and Dyson Demo outlets (The Gardens Mall, Queensbay Mall, 1 Utama Shopping Centre) at RM1,799.

The new barrel and brush attachments for Dyson Airwrap are not available yet in Malaysia. These new attachments (longer 30mm and 40mm barrels and smoothing brushes) will be sold separately as standalones for the existing Dyson Airwrap set.
