Zendaya and Tommy Hilfiger took over Harlem for New York Fashion Week, with a fun-filled show that unveiled the duo's new take on power dressing.
The Autumn 2019 Tommy x Zendaya series, which went on show at the Apollo Theater, put a modern spin on era-defining 1970s and 80s fashion, placing a heavy focus on sharp tailoring and bold patterns.
The clothes were replete with houndstooth and polka dot prints, while warm burgundy hues and shiny metallics upped the ante. Premium fabrics such as leathers, faux furs and velvets, also made for a glamorous collection.
Supermodels Ashley Graham, Winnie Harlow, Sara Sampaio, Candice Swanepoel, Alek Wek and Soojoo Park took to the runway during the event, strutting their stuff to the strains of live performances of 70s and early 80s funk music, courtesy of talented artists from the Harlem-based performance training center, the Mama Foundation for the Arts. They led a diverse cast of models spanning a range of sizes, ages, gender expressions and ethnicities.
The presentation – which marks the second co-created collection from Zendaya and Hilfiger – was part of Hilfiger's latest legendary experiential TommyNow runway event.
It featured digital content and photos celebrating Harlem's iconic music scene from the 30s to the 80s, as well as decorative touches such as classic American cars, burgundy velvet couches and vintage spotlights.
Shoppers can peruse the collection online, or via an online virtual reality (VR) shopping experience that lets customers purchase items from a virtual pop-up, without the need for a headset.
The experience will run through the end of September. An experience bus stocking pieces from the collection will also stop in Soho on Sept 13 and 14.
Hollywood star Zendaya was appointed global ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger's womenswear division last year and launched her debut collaborative collection for the brand back in March. – AFP Relaxnews
