5 It-bags that have been given a millennial makeover

The Burberry TB bag has been a fixture on its runways for the last two seasons. Its now the fashion houses new It-bag.

There used to be a time when It-bags were everything. A brand would come out with a specific bag and it goes down in the annals of fashion archives as the bag to carry during a particular season.

But there have always been attempts to bring back the era of the It-bags and the current trend is to revisit a fashion house’s archives, pull out a former It-bag and give it a millennial makeover.

Here are five of the latest It-designs that you should have your eye on.


Dior Saddle Bag

It

Thanks to a social media marketing campaign using influencers and celebrities dropping photos of the bags on the same day, the updated Dior Saddle bag was a hit. The original version saw the light again, while the next generation snapped up the latest one.

This season (or rather Summer 2019), men get their own version. Kim Jones, artistic director of Dior Menswear reinterpreted the saddle bag with a jacquard strap bearing the words, “Christian Dior” and an industrial buckle designed by Matthew Williamson.


Fendi Baguette

It

Fendi got into the spirit of former It-bags and brought back the Baguette. Designed by Silvia Venturini, the Baguette made an appearance in 1997 and immediately went to "It" bag status. The current version sees it “slightly re-proportioned”, and in a new oversized design and mini version.


Celine by Hedi Slimane Le 16, C and Triomphe

Hedi Slimane, who successfully annoyed the minimalist Phoebe Philo era clientale with his version of Celine, surprisingly didn’t come out with some goth rock chain bag for a late night party. Instead he delved into Celine’s archives and created a classic and structured bag called Le 16 which reflects the brand’s heritage.

It made its debut via Lady Gaga in August 2018. Two other bags followed, the C bag, a crossbody bag with chain strap inspired by the 1970s Celine logo closure and the Triomphe, a minimalist structured bag with a triomphe metal closure.


Burberry TB

It

In August 2018, Burberry launched The Thomas Burberry Monogram created by Riccardo Tisci and designed in collaboration with British art director and graphic designer Peter Saville. This monogram will feature on its own and as an all-over-print in the Spring/Summer 2019 collection.

Tisci’s debut collection saw the release of the TB bag, referencing the initials of the house’s founder, Thomas Burberry. The structured bag comes with a detachable chain or leather strap.


Chanel Boy

It

The late Karl Lagerfeld, king of revisiting archives, was of course the first to start reinterpreting bags from the past, which he did with the Chanel Reissue in 2005.

For Spring/Summer 2019, he decided to elongate the Boy bag vertically for a fresh look.
