The Lunar New Year is not just about the oranges, ang pows and lion dance. It’s also about spending quality time with your loved ones. However, you can’t deny that what you wear still plays a big part. While local youth brands like Pestle & Mortar Clothing has succesfully merge style with heritage, the question remains. Do people these days adhere to tradition when it comes to their festive outfits? Or are their outfits now dictated by the runways?

Here’s what some young Malaysians have to say about their fashion choices for the Lunar New Year celebration. – Shobana Raja

I celebrate Chinese New Year in a traditional way. For example, we have to wear red on the first day, and on the second day, we must wear bright colours, but not black. I mean it’s a festive season, and I want to look good.

We usually buy new clothes before Chinese New Year – preferably in red. But on the second day, my family will wear gold. It has been said that gold is wealth.

For the kids in my family, they are usually dressed in a cheongsam or samfu. But I don’t always wear that. I’ll just wear a formal red shirt, which is compulsory. My parents and our family will always choose to wear gold. Only on this day do they actually get to look like royalty, and they love it.

My family is not so traditional in all this. We can wear anything we want, just not black and it must be new clothes. The day before Chinese New Year, we will literally spend the whole day looking for the perfect dress and colour that match us. I mean, New Year, New ME.

I’m Chindian, so our family doesn’t strictly follow Chinese traditions. We still have to wear red on the first day though. On the second day, we can wear any colour as long as it is not dark. It’s alright. Bright shades can really help you achieve a good selfie!
