A standout pair of shoes or bag is often enough the answer to dressing up a simple outfit. But you don’t have to travel far to look for great designs. Juliet Mason at Petaling Jaya’s Atria Shopping Gallery has some great finds.

The Malaysia label is owned by Ngan Min Yi. When we spoke to her, the University Of Melbourne graduate says that she has always had a passion for fashion – which why she left the IT industry to start her own fashion company.

“What strikes me – or frustrates me – is that it’s hard to find a pair of good quality shoes that are fashionable yet affordable. Either it’s too expensive or the quality is lacking,” Ngan explains about why she founded the label.

Juliet Mason started its business in January 2016. In terms of the pricing, the label’s handbags are priced from RM249 to RM419 while shoes are priced from RM189 to RM329.

Describe your brand.

The Juliet Mason woman has a style on her own, where her look is distinctive and cannot be copied. She stands out in the crowd. There is always a “wow” factor in each bag or each pair of shoes. At Juliet Mason, it is style meets comfort plus affordability.

Who do you feel your customer is?

She knows how to have fun and be stylish. She likes to push for a little more style in her handbags and shoes than her friends. She experiments and surprises herself with something different each time. She does not settle.

Who or what inspires your designs?

People’s lifestyles, famous fashion blogs.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced in the industry so far?

The challenge is always balancing the creative design and saleability of each product. Also the balancing of the ringgit and cents. Malaysians are not really willing to invest in a pair of good quality shoes too. Instead, they go for branded handbags.

How have you overcome those challenges?

By knowing and understanding a customer’s preference, but not compromising the brand’s identity. In order to offer surprising new ranges, we constantly push for a little more “edge”, or else the brand would remain stagnant and uninteresting.
