You can never have too many headscarves, just like bags and shoes. And with the current influx of local brands, getting the perfect hijab has never been easier. Although, it can actually be harder as there are just so many styles and colours to choose from!
There are many popular brands on the local market, with some causing near riots, long queues and crashing servers. While some may or may not be more about hype than anything else, there are several strong brands out there that do deliver in terms of quality, comfort, colours and styles.
Here’s a look at three well-known names that top the must-have hijab list. If you’ve struggled with how to wear it correctly or in a particular style, some of these brands feature the “instant” hijab, as in, slip it on and that’s all you have to do.
This brand doesn’t need an introduction; it’s by popular actress Neelofa and her sister Noor Nabila. The duo have a selection of fashion and lifestyle brands under their company.
It’s got a surefire method of success with celebrity endorsement, savvy marketing and of course, the scarves themselves, which pretty much sell out immediately after their launch.
To say the brand is doing remarkably well would be an understatement, as it has made around RM50mil in profit.
To date, it has come out with more than 70 collections under the hijab brand (it started in 2014 ). It’s also available internationally, in over more than 30 countries including the United States, Britain, Australia, France, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Korea and Japan.
For the Raya season, the theme this year is Celebrate Love and there are 12 collections featuring different styles and elements. One of these collections sees the use of Korean chiffon, a first for the brand. Swarovski pearls and stones are also featured in some of the collections.
Each collection was inspired by influential women and go by the names of Stella, Duchess, Juliet, Jasmine, Eva, Camelia, Luna, Tiara, Rosalinda, Sonia, Victoria and Annabelle.
There are around 40 variations of colours, from pastels to more vibrants shades and it will come in either “instant” or “semi-instant”.

This particular brand was founded by fashion entrepreneur Vivy Yusof. What’s unique about this brand (apart from the scarves of course) is that it has an interesting concept.
It’s a lifestyle brand that follows the story of its ambassador “D” in a series of illustrations, from childhood memories to present adventures.
It comes in Premium Basics, which are plain scarves in a variety of colours consisting of luxe fabrics, iconic prints and the Limited Edition designs. There are also scarf inners.
Duck’s message is that wearing scarves should be something to celebrate and it’s designed with the “modern city girl in mind”.
It’s also about presentation and when you purchase a scarf, you also get a personalised thank you card from D and some styling ideas packed in a beautiful box.
The scarves are distingushable for their beautiful hem finishing and its signature silver duck charm.
For Hari Raya, the brand was inspired by the songket, specifically the kain sampin and came out with a collection featuring a Limited Edition Eid Scarf, Eid Twilly, Eid Greeting Card Set and Eid Money packets.
It comes in turquoise, lavender, brown and green.
Fashion and technology makes for a successful mix when IT graduate Eyqa Sulaiman and her husband Zulkarnaen, a former engineering student, started the brand in 2008.
Aimed at “bridging the gap between style and necessity”, Sugarscarf sold 400,00 units for its first range and has since expanded to Britain. Last year they held a fashion showcase in London.
Their scarves consist of luxurious fabrics and are beautifully embellished. The current line of collections include Madison, Very Madison, Lana Shawl and Juliette Madison. In fact, they even have a brand copyright protected creation in the Madison scarf, which combines the inner and outer hijab.
It has six stores nationwide and has also launched its online store in Britain. Recently, to celebrate their international fashion debut, the brand held an event called Sugarscarf Escapade 2016.
A new scarf line called Hope by Sugarscarf was featured, and part of the proceeds will go to a charity aimed at creating a better life for children suffering from an inadequate supply of clean water.
