SHINee lead singer Jonghyun found dead

Kim Jong-hyun, the lead singer of popular K-pop group SHINee, has died. He was 27.

According to a report by The Korean Herald, Kim, who is better known as Jonghyun, was found unconscious on Monday (Dec 18) in his rented apartment in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul.

A police statement said the singer was rushed to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The report also states that police are investigating Kim's death as a suspected suicide, as he was found nearby a frying pan with burning coal.

Police also received a phone call from Kim's sister, who was concerned that the singer might be attempting suicide. He had also sent her several messages that included the phrase "the last goodbye".

Kim was the lead singer of the hugely popular five-member group SHINee, created by SM Entertainment. The group, which comprised Jonghyun, Onew, Key, Minho and Taemin. debuted in May 2008 with the EP Replay,

before following up with its first studio album, The Shinee World later that year.

SHINee has released 11 studio albums (six Korean and five Japanese), with its biggest hits including Ring Ding Dong, Sherlock, Dream Girl, and Lucifer. The group was also considered one of the best live vocalists and performers in K-Pop.

Kim made his debut as a solo artiste in 2005, with an EP called Base. His first and only full length studio album, She Is, was released in 2016. Earlier this year, Kim had released a second compilation album called Story Op.2.
