The Malaysian style scene lost another prominent figure with the passing of fashion designer Andrew Gan.

Gan, 55, was reported to have died from a heart attack in Hong Kong on April 13.

Gan is widely respected as a veteran of the Malaysian fashion industry. He opened his first boutique in 1993, located at the Concorde Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

He spent five years in Tokyo, first learning Japanese, then studying fashion history, and another eight years designing in Hong Kong. Gan returned to Malaysia after that.

“He’s the kindest and most generous man I have ever known. We have always supported each other. Our friendship goes a long way,” said Gillian Hung, president of the Malaysian Official Designer’s Association (MODA), of Gan's passing.

Fellow designer Melinda Looi said that Gan was one of the Malaysian pioneers in fashion who never failed to support her. He was always ready with advice whenever she needed it as well.

Gillian Hung and Gan have been friends for a long time.

“I met him at MODA when I became a member in 1995. I then went to his boutique, which was bursting with breathtaking designs. It made me wish that I could own a gorgeous boutique like that one day,” she recalled.

Andrew Gan: An eye for detail

Gan has also been described by his peers as having always paid attention to the smallest details in each of his designs. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to a vision of high glamour and brilliant tailoring.

As it is, Gan’s passing is greatly felt by those in the Malaysian fashion community. Last year saw designer Sonny San dying from a heart attack, too.
