With the 2016 Rio Olympics currently underway, we spoke to 10 celebrities to find out which sporting event they are watching, their favourite Olympian and what sporting event they would compete in if they got to be a part of the Olympics.

Thanuja Ananthan, Miss Malaysia World 2009, actress

“I have so many favourite Olympic moments, but the one I cannot forget is watching Michael Phelps glide through the waters like a majestic submarine to the finish line. If I could compete in an Olympic sporting event, I would love to represent Malaysia in track and field. I used to represent the state in track and field when I was in school!”

“I would love to participate in badminton. I just know that Datuk Lee Chong Wei will make it to the final ... And, in this final game, he’d face me and it would be an all-Malaysian match contributing to Malaysia’s first ever Olympic gold medal. That’s my dream! (laughs)”

Hafiz, singer

“My favourite Olympian is (Sarawakian sprinter) Watson Nyambek. He is an inspiration to us. Malaysians are proud to have him. He is a legend.”

Kavita Sidhu, actress, producer

“I’ve always watched the Olympics since I was young. I absolutely love sports – believe it or not, I’ve dreamt of becoming a professional athlete. I was one in school, competing in many events with high jump and 100m hurdles as the main categories I participated in. I used to hold the high jump record in Selangor – I’m not sure if it’s been broken since – and almost represented Malaysia at the Junior Asean Games years ago.

“The most memorable moment in Olympic history for me, was watching Usain Bolt at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I don’t think the world has ever seen a man that fast!

“My favourite Malaysian athlete is Pandelela Rinong, the pride of our nation. She’s always so focused and true to her sport.”

Harris Baba, Singaporean singer, actor

“I would watch the hockey games. Hockey is a very nice game and it’s fun to watch as well, with all the stick work and dribbling.”

Jordan Voon, actor

“I enjoy watching the Olympics 100m sprint event. I like how the contestants keep their eyes focused on the finish line, and never get sidetracked by anything else. At the sound of the starter’s pistol, they go all out, right till the end. And after so many years, I still like 100m veteran Carl Lewis (10-time Olympic medallist) the best. He was so amazing during his heyday.”

Nora Danish, actress

“Believe it or not, if I had the chance to compete in the Olympics, I’d take part in boxing. I’ve always loved martial arts. I would love to fight for my country. The satisfaction would be surreal.”

Aiman Hakim, actor

“I admire Usain Bolt. I grew up playing sports a lot. One of my favourite sports is sprinting when I was in high school. And if I got to be in the Olympics, I’d play football.” (Aiman used to play football professionally).

M. Subash Mannan, actor, director, producer

“I like watching track and field, especially seeing the late Florence Griffith-Joyner (women’s 100m world record holder) in action. She was pretty on the track and always had a smile. She gave sports a true spirit and made it fun and interesting to watch, with her long fingernails.”

Lawrence Ong, actor

“My favourite Olympians are Xiong Ni (diving, China) and Rafael Nadal (tennis, Spain). I like to watch diving, swimming, gymnastics and tennis. If I were in the Olympics, I’d be one of the most well-rounded athletes, participating in four events, reflecting my aesthetics, speed, strength, and endurance. Oh dream on (laughs).”
