The 30% club aims to get more women into boardrooms

Tengku Nurul Azian Tengku Shariman and Elizabeth Passey advocate more gender diversity in boardrooms through a voluntary target of 30 women on boards.

Statistics gathered in 2013 by the TalentCorp-PwC Diversity in the Workplace Survey, the Malaysian Higher Education Indicator and Bursa 2013 data indicate that women comprised 57% of tertiary-level graduates in 2013. At entry-level positions, they outnumbered men at 53%. However, by the time they reached board level, their numbers had dwindled to 8.6%.

Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) Director of Human Capital Development Tengku Nurul Azian Tengku Shariman adds that one of the main issues chairmen and directors have is that there’s a shortage of board-ready women. “They say, “‘Where are the women?’ It’s why the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development funded the training of 900 women.
