Unconfirmed reports coming in from sources close to Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family say that she is hanging on to life by a thread.
Bobbi Kristina Brown, the 21-year-old daughter of the late pop star Whitney Houston and singer Bobby Brown, has been placed in a medically induced coma to stop brain swelling after she was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub in her Georgia home, a family friend Kim Burrell told Access Hollywood.
Burrell, a gospel singer who was close to Houston, told an entertainment TV program on Feb 2 that Brown’s loved ones were hoping for the best after doctors put her in a medically induced coma.
“Her eyes did move a little bit,” Burrell says in the interview. “We’re hoping that it’s just not a reflex. We’re hoping that it’s a conscious choice.”
CNN, citing unnamed sources close to the family, reports that Brown was transported to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta on Feb 3 after spending three days at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell. While North Fulton confirmed that Brown was no longer at their facility, a spokeswoman for Emory declined to confirm it had admitted Brown.
A report by Fox News paints a grimmer picture, citing an unnamed source who says that doctors have told her family, including her father, that there is nothing more they can do to revive her. “It’s now a matter of when the family wants to let go and accept that she’s pretty much not going to make it,” says the source. “They’ve left it up to the family as to how long they want to keep her alive.”
The same report also says that Brown’s brain function is “low” and that she's currently on a ventilator, with the implication that she may be brain dead. However, the report also says that Brown’s current condition has improved since earlier in the week.
‘Never been married’
Brown was discovered in the bathtub on Jan 30 by her partner, Nick Gordon, and a friend. Brown and Gordon have referred to each other as husband and wife and told both traditional and social media that they were married.
On Feb 3, however, Brown’s father says in a statement released through his lawyer, Christopher Brown, that the two were never legally married: “To correct earlier reports, Bobbi Kristina is not and has never been married to Nick Gordon.”
“We are currently investigating the events that led to the hospitalisation of Bobbi Kristina,” says the statement, adding that the family requested privacy.
So far, police and hospital officials have not commented on Brown’s condition or said what happened to her in the bathtub.
The circumstances are reminiscent of Houston’s death nearly three years ago. The megastar pop singer and actress drowned in a hotel bathtub in Beverly Hills, California, on Feb. 11, 2012. Authorities said cocaine use and heart disease contributed to the six-time Grammy Award winner’s death at age 48.
Houston won accolades for hit songs including I Will Always Love You and I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).
She divorced Bobby Brown in 2007 after a stormy 15-year marriage during which both spouses struggled with substance abuse. Bobby Brown, also a Grammy Award winner, started his career as frontman for the R&B group New Edition. – Reuters
