Malaysia's Dewakan (Kuala Lumpur) and Au Jardin (Penang) came in at No. 84 and No. 100 on the extended 51-100 list, which was announced last week.
Gaggan, which came in at No. 3 in last year's list, is the latest restaurant by celebrated chef Gaggan Anand to claim the top position on the list.
After multiple iterations of his Bangkok restaurant (which was previously crowned The Best Restaurant in Asia a record four times), chef Gaggan Anand unveiled this reimagined version of his culinary concept in a new location in late 2019.
Blending progressive Indian cuisine with influences from Japan, France and Thailand, chef Gaggan Anand’s signature 20+ course menu is a masterful interplay of taste, texture and technique, presented with immersive, interactive elements.
The intimate 14-seat counter, overlooking an open kitchen, places guests at the heart of the creative process, transforming communal dining into an unforgettable experience.
The second and third placings on this year's list were taken up by Hong Kong restaurants – The Chairman at No.2, and Wing at No. 3. Wing's chef-owner Vicky Cheng also secured the peer-voted Inedit Damm Chefs' Choice Award.
Last year's No. 1 restaurant, Sézanne from Tokyo, came in at No. 4 this time around, while Seoul's Mingles makes the host city proud by rounding up the Top 5.
The ranking was created from the votes of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential gender-balanced group of 350-plus experts made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and regional culinary leaders from 16 cities across the region.
