EVEN if it can’t cure your high blood pressure and fix your stomach aches, it’s still worth adding celery to a smoothie.

If you’re struggling with the taste, then there are a few ways to give it some added zing so you actually look forward to a healthier breakfast smoothie.

“To make the drink tastier and easier on your stomach, stir a tablespoon of yoghurt into the juice, for example,” says Gabriele Kaufmann of Germany’s Federal Centre for Nutrition (BZfE).

You can also add a piece of cucumber or carrot to the celery in the juicer – or some orange juice. “Chopped herbs, such as parsley, mint or lemon balm, give celery juice a special boost of freshness,” says Kaufmann.

If you don’t have a juicer, you can also put pieces of celery or celeriac in a blender and mix them up. Add enough water to turn the vegetables into a puree. Now place a sieve lined with a filter cloth on a bowl, place the puree on top and squeeze well.

No matter how you make it, “celery juice should ideally be drunk as freshly prepared as possible,” Kaufmann says, so your body can get the maximum amount of all those vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

You can also make the juice the evening before if you are in a hurry. Pour it into a screw-top jar, close the jar tightly and store it in the fridge so it is ready for you to start the next day. – dpa
