The World's 50 Best Bars list for 2020 will be revealed in a virtual ceremony to be held at 11pm Malaysian time.

The embattled bartending industry Malaysia could see some cheer tonight when the World's 50 Best Bars list for 2020 is revealed in a virtual ceremony to be held at 11pm (Malaysian time).

Malaysia had 3 bars – Bar Trigona, Coley, and JungleBird – on the Asia's 50 Best Bars list announced earlier this year, and hopes are high throughout the industry that we'll see one or two bars in the World list as well.

Published annually since 2009, the World's 50 Best Bars is a definitive list of the world’s best drinking venues, voted for by an Academy of over 540 experts worldwide. The list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars has been published since 2016.

Getting a Malaysian bar on the list of the World's Best 50 Bars would be a big motivation to those in the local bartending industry, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. The MCO, which has been in force since March, has thus far prohibited most bars and pubs from opening, while the slump in travel and tourism has also had a devastating effect on the industry as a whole.

In a press release, Mark Sansom, content editor for The World’s 50 Best Bars, expressed hope that this year's list that will give bars something positive to talk about and drinks lovers somewhere to look forward to visiting.

"“We are well aware of the hardship hospitality venues the world over have experienced and the toll that Covid-19 has wreaked on our industry. However, we strongly believe that the announcement of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020 will provide a focal point and stimulus for bars as they enter the next stage of recovery," he added.

"It is also important to recognise the passion, creativity and craft that has seen so many through this harrowing period and usher in some much-needed positivity as guests seek to return to outstanding bars.”

The announcement of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020 list follows on from the work of the 50 Best for Recovery programme, which has raised US$1.24mil to date for the hospitality sector.

The initiative included providing grants to 236 businesses from 53 countries as a direct result of fundraising efforts, one of which was Atas Speakeasy in Ipoh.

The World's 50 Best Bars virtual ceremony will begin at 11pm (Malaysian time) tonight. You can view the digital countdown of the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020 through The World’s 50 Best Bars Facebook page and 50 Best Bars YouTube channel.
