The average Magellanic penguin lives to be between eight and 10 years old. Herbie, at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the United States, turned 35 last November.

Herbie is the second oldest Magellanic penguin on record. To keep Herbie looking and feeling good in his twilight years, the zoo gives him, and his 26 penguin friends, an annual checkup.
