It can be very difficult to photograph a black dog because all the black fur absorbs the light and makes it hard to see contrast. If you’re not careful, you get a black blob with super shiny teeth!

So, how do you show off your jet-black pet? Here are some pawsome tips.

First, avoid a lot of contrast between your pet and the background. Avoid white walls and flash as they create too much contrast.

Go for soft, even light. Also, avoid dappling shadows. These are too difficult to deal with for your camera and will mess up the balances.

Ideal times are overcast days and an hour before sunset.

Second, if your camera has a blur background option, use it. It will help your pet stand out.

Third, focus on a highlight like your pet’s eyes or the way the light shines on their fur. Zooming in can be a great idea too, especially if your camera will let you focus on a small area such as eyes or face.

Finally, a collar or scarf can help highlight a pet’s features. For example, a brown collar can bring out a pet’s tobacco eyes whereas a green one is perfect for a pet with emerald eyes.

Alternatively, go for deep shadow shots that show how superbly black your pet is. If you’re inside, try a dark purple background and capture the shine highlighting their eyes and coat.
